Founded in
1932, the U.S.C.S. is an international philatelic organization of over 1,100
members with an interest in postmarks and covers from all maritime services.
This includes Navy ships of all countries, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Navy
bases, merchant ships with seapost and paquebot markings, related cachets, and
other naval memorabilia. It is the only organization in the United States
devoted to Navy and maritime covers, and is one of the oldest specialized postal
history societies in the world
Today the USCS has over 1,100 worldwide
members and make many resources available for collectors. The monthly USCS
LOG publication (included with membership) is packed with information about
naval covers, ships, postcards, history, and the addresses of ships to send for
your own postmarks from US Navy ships.
The USCS has auctions. postcard sales,
and a very popular sales circuit that allows you to specify which theme of naval
covers you would like to inspect on approval. These covers are always a
great bargain for serious collectors. The USCS also has numerous
publications available to members that detail lists of cancellations used on
ships and lists of ships participating in various events such as the list of
ships at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 or the listing of ships in Tokyo Bay.
Many members have special interests in US Navy covers such as Manned space
flight recovery, aircraft carriers, battleships, subs, destroyers, Great White
Fleet, etc.
There is a yearly national convention
and local chapters in many cities where you can meet collectors that have
similar interests.
